Biography
Alon Near is a double bassist and composer working between New York and Europe. His music centers on melody and simplicity — with the bass as a vocal storyteller.
After relocating to New York, Near completed his studies at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, where he developed a compositional language rooted in clarity, space, and attentive interaction. During these years he performed at Carnegie Hall as part of pianist Billy Childs’ quartet, and began a long-standing collaboration with saxophonist Eli Degibri, touring internationally and contributing as both bassist and arranger. He has also appeared in projects alongside artists such as Joey Alexander and the WDR Big Band, experiences that further shaped his sense of ensemble depth and nuance.
In 2021, Near was awarded 3rd Prize at the International Society of Bassists Competition. He is also a member of the Yuval Cohen Quartet, whose debut album was released on ECM Records — an experience that refined his sensitivity to texture, silence, and ensemble transparency.
His debut album, Names, Places, marks his first statement as a bandleader — a body of work shaped by years of touring and movement, grounded in melody, memory, and human connection.
Near’s band — featuring pianist Tom Oren, drummer Ofri Nehemya, and trumpeter Itamar Borochov — embodies a long-term musical dialogue grounded in trust and subtle interplay.
